Hospital bag checklist for surgery and day surgery

Preparing for a hospital visit can be daunting, especially if you have never been before. But the team here at The Friendlies is here to help make you feel welcome, comfortable and confident you’re receiving the very best care.

No matter what procedure you are having, taking the time to be prepared and have the right items in your hospital bag will help you have a more relaxed stay.

Below, you will find some general checklists on what to take to hospital including a list for children. Be sure to review any documents provided by your specialist or surgeon for specific instructions on what to pack in your hospital bag related to your procedure.

General tips on what to take to hospital for surgery

  • Only bring items you need
  • Leave valuables at home
  • Do not wear jewellery
  • Remove nail polish
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and non-slip shoes
  • Shower before coming to hospital and do not apply deodorant, talcum powder, moisturiser or makeup

What type of bag to take to hospital

Use a small, secure bag, ideally a soft bag with a zip, such as a light backpack, tote or duffel bag. Avoid bags that can’t be secured such as reusable grocery bags.

Hospital bag checklist: Hospital bag essentials

The Friendlies hospital bag checklist is designed for packing an overnight hospital bag or for hospital stays of up to five nights. You may not need all of these items but this list should help you identify things that are easy to forget and will provide a little comfort throughout your stay.

Administration

  • Consent forms
  • Health care card, pharmaceutical safety net card, Pensioner concession card if applicable
  • Health fund card
  • OVA card for Veterans
  • Medicare card
  • Certified copy of Power of attorney or Advance Health Directive if applicable.
  • Method of payment (EFTPOS or Credit Cards)
  • Loose change for small purchases
  • Notebook and pen or phone with notes app

Medical information and items

  • Any relevant X-Rays or scans
  • Doctor’s letters, reports, notes
  • List of current medications
  • Medications in their original packaging
  • Inhalers, creams, ointments, patches, eye or ear drops, injections etc.

Personal items

  • Sleepwear: pyjamas or nightie/nightgown (preferably button-up), dressing gown
  • Slippers or comfortable flat shoes (preferably non-slip)
  • Underwear
  • A light zip-up jacket, cardigan or throw
  • Toiletries: toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, shaver, brush, deodorant, moisturiser etc. similar to what you would pack for a weekend away or short hotel stay
  • Books, magazines, knitting or games
  • Pads and/or tampons if relevant
  • If you are taking a mobile phone, be sure it is fully charged and don’t forget to take a charger or portable battery bank
  • Headphones
  • Eye mask if you’re a light sleeper

Physical aids

  • Glasses and/or hearing aids
  • Walking stick or other walking aids

Other optional items

  • Snacks (especially if you have special dietary requirements)
  • Water bottle
  • Lip balm
  • Warm, non-slip socks

What to take to hospital for day surgery

  • Wait times for day surgery can vary depending on where you are on the surgeon’s so it’s important to keep in mind that you may be seating in a waiting room for some time. Wear comfortable clothing and bring:
  • Consent forms
  • Health care card, pharmaceutical safety net card, Pensioner concession card if applicable
  • Health fund card
  • OVA card for Veterans
  • Medicare card
  • Method of payment (EFTPOS or Credit Cards)
  • Any relevant X-Rays, doctor’s letters or reports
  • List of current medications
  • A light jacket, cardigan or throw
  • Reading materials, iPad, knitting or games
  • Glasses and/or hearing aids
  • Headset for listening to music or podcasts
  • Walking stick or other walking aids

Be sure to follow the preparation instructions provided by the Day Surgery Unit and any specific directions from your surgeon. It’s also a good idea to ensure your phone is fully charged before leaving home.

What to pack in an overnight hospital bag for a child

Going to hospital can be a big deal for children so take time to pack items that will reassure your child and keep them comfortable. Clearly label all personal items with your child’s name.

Administration

  • Consent forms
  • Health fund and Medicare card
  • Method of payment (EFTPOS or Credit Cards)
  • Any relevant X-Rays or scans
  • Doctor’s letters, reports, notes
  • List of current medications
  • Medications in their original packaging
  • Inhalers, creams, ointments, patches, eye or ear drops, etc.

Clothing and personal items

  • Cotton pyjamas for the procedure (check advice from your specialist or surgeon)
  • Regular pyjamas for overnight
  • Plush toys, blankets or other items to keep the child comfortable
  • Colouring books, books, toys or games
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, brush or comb
